"Meeting the Moment" care map/pep talk by Schessa of Firebrand Creative House.
Spoken at beTrue studios in Hollywood, CA for AIGA LA's Graph*c Content conference on November 16, 2024.
This November, many of us are feeling unmoored and uprooted by a difficult 2024 that has ended in a disappointing election (once again). If we are going to answer the questions below (my original self prompt), we first need to ground as individuals and as communities. So how do we do that as young designers for whom a large part of their education or early career was spent in quarantine and social isolation?
Then we can answer (together): What do designers have to offer within the current geo-political landscape? Is it a privilege or a necessity to make things beautiful and understandable? What is our role in change-making? What did Toni Cade Bambara mean when she said "The role of the artist is to make revolution irresistible"?
The Work
The 'work' that I allude to in the first Q&A is this: designing for distribution of essential resources (we have enough that no one needs to be hungry/houseless) especially as inflation continues in the U.S.; truth-telling as resistance under administration(s) that lie, hide, and/or politicize facts; and climate action & justice—if we don't have a living planet if doesn't matter what our governmental structure is.
